Sometime in early March, 1836, it is storied that Col. William Travis used his battle sword to draw a line in the sand of the courtyard of the Alamo and challenge the defenders to cross that line and join him. It is also storied that all but one of the defenders of the Alamo crossed that line to join Travis in the defense of the Alamo and of the freedom of Texas. Now, whether this story is true is irrelevant. There were supposedly witnesses who survived the battle as non-combatants and lived to tell the story. There are certainly enough naysayers this day who say the story is false. What is not false and is absolutely indisputable is that 189 men, men with families and responsibilities and above all, honor, chose to die that day. They chose to die for a cause. They chose to die for a principle. They chose to die for Texas. Those men possessed a fortitude that has been all but lost in our country.

On our floors of Congress there exists a line. This same line has appeared in the judiciary. This line, however, is not a line of honor, it’s a line of shame. It’s a line that our ‘leaders’ choose not to cross, not because of their principles or values. They choose not to cross because they jeopardize their standing in the party. They choose not to cross so as not to endanger their position, their place at the table. It makes absolutely no difference if they are conservative or liberal. The members of our government have fallen in lock step with the ‘party’ leaders. Make no mistake, this is their choice. If they cross the line, they may die a political death, but that death, if made in an effort for America, would not be in vain. It would carry some brand of honor, if made to protect the American dream, American values and American exceptionalism.

Where are the heroes of today? Why can they not see the line? Who is the leader that will challenge them to cross the line? It only takes one who accepts responsibility for his own actions. The rest will follow – for America.
